Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily detect internal defects of a hot steel salb, by a method wherein a hot steel slab is rolled at less than 5% rolling reduction in the directions other than the longitudinal one, an ultrasonic wave is excited in the hot steel slab by means of an electromagnetic ultrasonic transmitter-receiver, and the wave transmitted or reflected thereby is received. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a steel slab is treated by means of a descaler DC, and surface defects and internal defects are detected by flaw detectors SD and ID respectively. The defective parts are removed in a shear (a), and the slab is divided into pieces having a length for rolling. The sectional configuration of the slab is detected before the surface defect detection and stored in a processing computer PSC, while the temperature of the slab is detected and processed directly before the internal defect detection and stored in the computer PSC. The position of the slab is followed by counting the pulses generated by a synchronizing pulse generator which generates a transfer synchronizing pulse at the rate of one pulse per prescribed length feed of the slab. The configuration data and temperature data are stored in the computer PSC, being made to correspond to the detection positions on the slab.
