Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify a process for precipitating and separating a cyanide as a complex salt of zinc-metal cyanocomplex which will not redissolve, by effecting the formation of the complex in an oxidizing vessel.
CONSTITUTION: Cyanide ion-contg. waste water 1 is introduced into the first reaction vessel 30 acting as an oxidizing vessel, where caustic soda 2, sodium hypochlorite 3 and a zinc compound 5 are added to the water, and then into the second reaction vessel 32, where sulfuric acid 4 and a reducing agent 6, e.g. sodium bisulfite, are added to the water. A water-posttreatment vessel 11 used in a conventional manner can be omitted on the recognition that a complex is stable and not redissolved as far as it is formed in the range of pH 6W12, in spite of the general view that the formation of the complex is effected at pH 9. In this regard, pH in the first reaction vessel 30 is at 10W11, while pH in the second reaction vessel 32 is at 7W8. Thereafter, the treated water flows into a thickener 15, where the complex is concentrated, settled and separated by the addition of a high molecular flocculant. The chemical formula of the complex is ZnK[M(CN)e]2.
