PURPOSE:To achieve stable reading operation without being influenced by the quality of bar code symbols, by estimating each digit information code on the basis of the start or stop code of a bar code. CONSTITUTION:The width of a start code ST or stop code SP is calculated and multiplied by a prescribed coefficient to estimate 40 the digit width of the 1st digit information code, thereby outputting it as a size signal S5 for the 1st digit. Further, AND circuits 55 and 56, only when the start code ST and stop code SP are both detected, outputs a digit-division success signal S16, which is passed through an OR circuit 57 to be used as an actuation signal for the following statistical decision. Further, a master MPU20 and a slave MPU21 makes a statistical decision on whether a constant quantity of data regarding each digit of bar codes of a label 1 is stored in a divided-data buffer 49, by using the digit-division success signal S6.
