Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate a cellulosic derivative as an insoluble component directly from wood in high yield, by heating wood having organic groups introduced into part of the hydroxyl groups, and treating the heated wood with a lower aliphatic alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: Wood, preferably wood flour, is immersed in an aqueous solution containing urea and ammonium sulfate and reacted with dimethylformamide and acetic anhydride to give a modified wood flour having introduced acetyl groups. Benzyl ether is added to the dried resultant wood flour and the mixture is heated- treated preferably at 200°C or above. The resultant solution is then introduced into a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol, to deposit and separate the aimed cellulosic derivative.
EFFECT: Even components other than the cellulose in the wood can be separated and obtained in an effectively utilizable state.
