Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent creaking of low frequency under braking, by making the mean diameter of the steel fibers of a friction material for a disc brake less than 0.01mm.
CONSTITUTION: Steel fibers, whose mean diameter is less than 0.01mm and whose mean length is not more than 5mm, are used for a friction material for a disc brake. Friction materials shown in Tab. 1 are produced as embodiments. Creak tests are conducted on these friction materials when they are new. Each friction material comprises 60% by weight of steel fibers, 20% by weight of graphite, 10% by weight of an organic filler and 10% by weight of an inorganic filler. The results of the tests are shown in Tab. 2 where Ti denotes the temperature of a rotor before braking and β(g) denotes the deceleration. The degree of creaking is divided into three levels "1", "2" and "3". The maximum degree of creaking is represented by "3". Noncreaking is represented by "0". Creaking is hardly caused on the friction materials A, B according to the present invention.
