Abstract
PURPOSE: To control foaming on the surface of a polymerization mixture, by recirculating a slurry mixture in the polymerization system through a recirculation pipe to the upper portion inside the reactor during the latter half of the polymerization period, and spraying the slurry from spray nozzles over the surface of the polymerization mixture, in polymerizing a vinyl chloride type monomer in an aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: Into a polymerization vessel are charged a vinyl chloride-based monomer (mixture), a polymerization initiator, an aqueous medium and a dispersing aid, to start the polymerization. During the polymerization reaction, the slurry mixture of the polymerization system, after the conversion has reached 50%, is circulated continuously or intermittently through a recirculation pipe to the upper portion inside the reactor, and the slurry mixture is sprayed from at least one nozzle provided on the upper portion over the surface of the polymerization mixture, to continue the polymerization and finally obtain a vinyl chloide (co)polymer. The time of recovery can be shortened by performing the circulation and spraying of the slurry mixture also during the unreacted monomer recovery operation subsequent to the polymerization reaction.
EFFECT: No scale forms, and products with less fish eyes can be obtained.
