Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a polyvinyl chloride composition having a specific gravity adjusted to a desired value without detriment to strength, durability, etc., by adding an inorganic filler powder treated with a silane coupling agent.
CONSTITUTION: Use is made of a filler powder obtained by treating an inorganic filler powder soluble in neither water nor the monomer (e.g., carbon black powder, glass balloon microspheres) with a silane coupling agent (e.g., vinyltrichlorosilane) in an amount providing the proportion given by the formula (usually, about 0.001W1,000pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. inorganic filler). Namely, in suspension-polymerizing a vinyl chloride monomer (optionally, together with about below 50% copolymerizable vinyl monomer) in an aqueous mediumn in the presence of a monomer-soluble polymerization initiator (e.g., lauroyl peroxide) the polymerization reaction is carried out by directly adding the above-produced filler to the polymerization vessel (prior to or during the polymerization).
