Abstract

PURPOSE: An aromatic polycarbamate is pyrolyzed in a low-boiling inert solvent under pressure to produce the titled compound along with little by-products in high efficiency, which is used as a starting material to give high-quality urethane foam.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic polycarbamate of formula I (R is 1W4C alkyl; m is 0W5) is pyrolyzed in a specific solvent under pressure at 215W350°C into an aromatic isocyante of formula II and an alcohol. The solvent boils at a temperature lower than 215°C and is selected from aliphatic ethers, ketones, esters, and alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons. While the compound of formula II formed by the reaction remains in the solvent, the alcohol formed is continuously taken out of the reaction system to accelerate the reaction. The underisable formation of tar polymers is reduced and the solvent is removed under mild conditions, thus the objective compound of high quality is obtained.
