PURPOSE:To perform efficient, error-free formating by storing a nonvolatile storage element with position information which corresponds to a defective position of a recording medium, and then using the recording medium on the basis of the contents of the storage element. CONSTITUTION:During a test of a magnetic disk 1, the entire data surface is read while a head counter 8 and a cylinder counter 9 go up successively. If there is a deffective on the data surface, a head 2 generates a pulse signal and then a write control circuit 11 is driven through a peak-value interval counter 7 to write the data in an ROM13. The values of the counter 9, a position counter 10, and the counter 7 are used as defective position information. While updating the address, the address counter 9 writes the defective position information and after the test is completed, data consisting entirely of bits 1 is written in the ROM13. Thus, efficient, error-free formating is performed.
