Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a water-based sizing agent for glass fiber capable of bonding the glass fibers firmly with each other and preventing the yellow discoloration of the fiber-reinforced resin molded article, by compounding a specific polyurethane emulsion with a silane coupling agent containing amino group.
CONSTITUTION: The titled water-based sizing agent for glass fiber contains (A) a polyurethane emulsion obtained by the chain extension of the prepolymer of xylylene diisocyanate with a polyether polyol or a polyester polyol, and (B) a silane coupling agent containing amino group, e.g. γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. The sizing agent is used in combination with water and lubricant. The amount of the sizing agent applied to the glass fiber is preferably about 0.3W 2.0% as the solid content of the sizing agent (ignition loss). The sizing agent bonds the glass fibers firmly with each other. It gives a glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin molded article free from yellowing and having excellent appearance, color tone, and physical properties.
