Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve durability and a tape running property, by forming a crevasse having prescribed length, width, space and area ratio, on the surface of a magnetic coating film of a magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:On a non-magnetic supporting body 1a, a magnetic coating material for forming a magnetic coating film 1b is applied, and in a state that this applied magnetic coating film is not dried yet and is capable of flowing, a magnetic field exceeding about 1,000 oersteds is applied in the orienting direction for >= about 100msec. Subsequently, a crevasse 1c of about 0.05-0.50mu in width and about 1.0-20.0mu in length is formed at intervals of about 0.3-5.0mu so as to become about 1.0-10.0% of an area of the cating film surface. In this way, it is possible to obtain a magnetic tape which is excellent in its durability and tape running property.
