Abstract

PURPOSE: To hydrogenate highly unsatd. hydrocarbon without causing isomerization of olefins, by passing a hydrocarbon mixt. having a low degree of unsaturation and containing highly unsatd. hydrocarbon through a layer of palladium catalyst having a specified particle size and borne by carrier.
CONSTITUTION: A mixt. of 4C or higher hydrocarbons having a low degree of unsaturation and containing highly unsaturated hydrocarbon, is passed through a layer of palladium catalyst borne by a carrier in a fixed bed reaction vessel. The catalyst has a particle size of not larger than 25% of the inner diameter of reaction pipe and is passed through the catalyst layer at a linear velocity of at least 100m/hr. The hydrocarbon mixt. is, e.g., 4C hydrocarbon mixt. consisting of butadiene, butene, etc. obtained by steam cracking of naphtha, etc. The highly unsatd. hydrocarbons are propadiene, methylacetylene, pentadiene, etc.
