Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled copolymer having improved rolling resistance and breaking characteristic, by charging a specified volume of a polymerization vessel with a solvent and a monomer mixture of styrene and butadiene in the presence of a catalyst and adding thereto a metal halide under a specified condition of agitation.
CONSTITUTION: In producing a styrene/butadiene copolymer in the presence of an organolithium catalyst and a Lewis base; at least 90% of the polymerization vessel is charged with the monomers and a solvent. Then, the polymerization reaction is carried out under a condition of agitation to provide a Reynolds number of 150, while the temperature is slowly raised. After the temperature in the system reaches a peak, the agitation is intensified so that a Reynolds number at least twice the initial value is obtained, and a halide of a metal selected from silicon, germanium and tin is added to effect a coupling reaction. It is necessary to raise the reaction temperature slowly, and it is preferred that the reaction temperature is slowly raised from a temperature of -20W50°C, for example, at a rate of about 3W15°C/min, and the maximum temperature does not exceed 150°C.
