Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the economical production of the title polymer, by hydrogenating the C-C double bonds of a conjugated diene polymer in solution in the presence of a catalyst comprising a hydrogenation catalyst supported by a powder silica carrier and after completion of the reaction, leaving the catalyst unseparated from the reaction solution.
CONSTITUTION: The C-C double bonds of a conjugated diene polymer (e.g., acrylonitrile/butadiene) are hydrogenated in solution in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g., Pd and a catalyst of a metal or nonmetal selected from GroupsIa, IIa, IIIa, b, IVa, b, Va, VIa and VIIa of the periodic table) supported by a powder silica carrier, average particle diameter ≤10μ. After completion of the reaction, the hydrogenated conjugated diene polymer is recovered without separating the catalyst from the reaction solution. During this hydrogenation, flocculation of the carrier does not occur and there is no need for a solvent or catalyst separation equipment for catalyst recovery. Accordingly, the cost is low and besides there is no difference in polymer properties between the thus-produced polymer and a catalyst-free polymer.
