Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently produce hydrogen by electrolyzing water with a fluorine- contg. cation exchange resin membrane made of terpolymer of a fluorovinyl compound with a fluorovinyl ether compound and a fluorinated olefin compound as a diaphragm.
CONSTITUTION: Water is electrolyzed with a fluorine-contg. cation exchange resin membrane as a diaphragm. The membrane is made of terpolymer of a fluorovinyl compound represented by formulaIwith a fluorovinyl ether compound represented by formula II and a fluorinated olefin compound, and the exchange capacity of the membrane is 0.5W2.5milliequiv. per 1g dry resin. In formulaI, X is F or -CF3, each of Y and Y' is F or 1W10C perfluoroalkyl, l=0W3, m=0W1, n=1W12, A is a member of -COOH, -COF or -CN, -COOR1, -COOM, -CONR2R3, where R1 is 1W10C alkyl, each of R2 and R3 is H, and M is an alkali metal. In formula II X and Y are identical with X and Y in formulaI, and Rf is 1W12C perfluoroalkyl.
