Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance ueful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, etc., by treating benzoylformic acid with bacteria belonging to Lactobacillus genus, Leuconostoc genus, Streptococcus genus, Nocardia genus, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Benzoylformic acid is treated with bacteria belonging to Lactobacillus genus, Leuconostoc genus, Strephococcus genus, Nocardia genus, Proteus genus, Fusarium genus, etc., e.g. Lactobacillus brevis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Nocardia corallina, etc. The treatment is carried out by culturing said bacteria in a medium containing benzoylformic acid, or by reacting benzoylformic acid with the cultured liquid. The reaction is carried out at 3W9pH and 20W40°C to obtain D(-)-mandelic acid converted from benzoylformic acid.
