PURPOSE:To exactly discriminate whether a paper money is true or false, its kind, its surface or reverse side, etc., and to remove influence caused by variation of intensity of a pattern, and a variation of sensitivity of a detecting part, by deriving a difference between a section integral pattern stored in a storage means and a standard pattern set in advance. CONSTITUTION:A light beam from paper money to be discriminated is color- separated, a special feature of each color is detected by a detecting part 11, a signal of each color from this detecting part 11 is divided into prescribed sections, and at every section, the signal from the detecting part 11 is integrated by a section integrator 12. A section integral value from this integrator 12 is stored in a storage part 14, and an intensity distribution pattern of the integral value is smoothed by a smoothing part 15 and is provided to a normalizing part 16. Also, the whole of the output signal of the detecting part 11 is integrated by a whole integrator 13, is provided to the normalizing part 16, the section integral value is divided by the whole integral value, and magnitude of the intensity distribution pattern is normalized. An output of this normalizing part 16 and a standard pattern from a pattern storage part 17 are compared by a difference operating part 18, and the paper money is discriminated by a result of its operation result from each color comparing part, in a discriminating part 20.
