Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve ice breaking power by fixing an elevatable motor hammer to a supporting member movable along a beam attached to the bow and cracking previously the ice ahead of the ship proceeding direction. CONSTITUTION:The root portion of a beam 4 is fixed to the bow and its end portion is provided with a fixed moving member 5 which moves on the ice. On the beam 4, a supporter 10 is placed so as to move along it. An elevatable motor hammer 11 is placed on the supporter 10. Such ice breaking apparatuses as the above are fixed to both the sides of the bow. During ice breaking operation, the motor hammer 12 makes cracks in the ice ahead of the ship proceeding direction, thus facilitating the ice breaking operation of the bow of the ice breaker.
