PURPOSE:To provide a paper feeding mechanism in which the retention of a feed lever can be released with limited action and a small power by providing a retaining means for normally holding the lever at a standby position and a charging means for releasing the retention thereof only during the time of feeding paper. CONSTITUTION:When a paper feeding is done with a line shift, a solenoid 5 is actuated to release the engagement of a retaining fitting 26 and the lower portion of a lower lever 19 is tilted to the frame side about a connection shaft 20 to move a contact surface 10 to the side of a feed cam 23 inward from an external standby cam 22 untl it stops on a shift surface 24. At the same time, the lower lever 19 is pushed forward by a rotating force with the displacement of a feed cam 23 to turn an upper lever 18 with a fixed shaft 17 as the fulcrum so that a pawl 7 of the lower lever 19 will engage a tooth of a pawl wheel 3 to turn it by one tooth. After the feeding of the pawl wheel 4 by one tooth, the feed lever 4 returns to the original position of the standby cam 22 on the inclination of the shift surface 24.
