Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically remove a heavy metal from contaminated soil without deterioration in the chemical property of the soil, by growing a glycoside compound type plant or an other compound type plant in the contaminated soil and then removing the plant after growing.
CONSTITUTION: A glucoside cmpound (e.g., C20H27ON9ON9C12H13O8)-type plant (e.g., a Japanese laurel, a polygonum, buckwheat or a Japanese green gentian) or another compound (e.g., C17H18O17, O18H18O2 or C22H16O21)-type plant (e.g.,a ditch reed, a ferm,) is cultivated in soil contaminated with a heavy metal such as Hg or Cd. Then the heavy metal is removed from the soil by reaping said plant, after it grows to a considerable degree. It is possible to simply reduce rhe content of the metal in the soil to a safe level by the present method, which can be performed at low cost beccause of use of no expensive chemicals but a weed.
