Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an extremely thin type display device, by insalling a filter which is capable of varying a peak value of optical wavelength, like an array in accordance with each picture element, and varying and controlling applied voltage at every picture elements. CONSTITUTION:On a transparant substrate 4, a common electrode 10 is formed in the lateral direction of matrix. Subsequently, an intermediate layer 9 of an interference filter functioned as a picture element is formed in the form of matrix. On this intermediate layer 9, an upper electrode 11 is formed to a pattern constituting a common electrode in the longitudinal direction of matrix. In this state, a transparent piezoelectric body whose thickness is varied in accordance with an electric field is used as the intermediate layer 9, so that optical thickness can be varied by varying the applied voltage of the electrodes 10, 11. According to such a constitution, a transmitting light beam 12 of each element of a variable wavelength filter corresponding to each picture element becomes each special peak wavelength and is capable of displaying a desired color on each picture element. Accordingly, an extremely thin type display device can be obtained.
