Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a carcinostatic agent containing a chlorophyll derivative as an active component, and capable of killing the cancer cells remarkably and selectively by the radiation of visible light having a specific wavelength.
CONSTITUTION: The objective agent contains the chlorophyll derivative of formula[X is H or OH; Y is -COOCH3 or H; Z is Mg or two H atoms (at 13 and 14 positions)], as an active component. When the chlorophyll derivative is administered to an animal, it is accumulated in tumor cells in preference to the normal cells and discharged slowly from the tumor cells. It remarkably suppresses the proliferation of the tumor cells under irradiation with visible light having a wavelength of 400W700nm, and kills the tumor cells. On the other hand, the derivative is rapidly discharged from normal cells, and completely unreactive and harmless in the dark. the chlorophyll derivative can be prepared e.g. by removing the phytyl group from chlorophyll of a green plant (e.g. chlorella)with chlorophyllase in the cell and oxidizing the product with an oxidase.
