Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a composite body of high strength and toughness wherein an expanded Al alloy material and an Al alloy casting are metallically bound in casting the former into the latter by melting contact parts of both partially. CONSTITUTION:This composite body is constituted of an expanded Al alloy material 5, an Al alloy casting 6 casting said material therein and a fused layer 7 of both. To melt the material 5 to a desired extent in producing such composite material, it is preferable to set the volume thereof at about 1/5 with respect to the entire part of the composite material and to preheat metallic molds to about 300-500 deg.C in the stage of casting. Under conditions other than these, metallical binding is likely to be insufficnent. Depending upon the kinds of the constituting forms of the composite body, it is necessary to interpose a heat insulating material, for example, ceramic fibers, between the expanded material and the metallic molds to insulate the expanded material and molten metal against heat.
