Abstract

PURPOSE: To make long-term stable measurement possible by aerating the mixture of activated sludge sampled at the outlet of an aeration tank, measuring the concn. of CO2 produced therein and estimating the concn. of the microbes in the activated sludge from the process thereof.
CONSTITUTION: An activated sludge process is constituted of an aeration tank 1, a final settling basin 2, a supply pump 3 for mixed liquids of activated sludge to a measuring tank, a measuring tank 4 consisting of triplex series aeration tanks of a small size, a timer 5, a gas changing-over solenoid valve 6 for supplying the waste gases from the measuring tank successively to a CO2 analyzer 7, and an operator 8 for operating the concn. of microbes and the contents of accumulated materials. The tankds 4 are connected in series, and the mixed liquids of activated sludge are charged continuously therein from one of these and are aerated successively, after which they are discharged. The rates of aeration to the respective tanks are maintained constant, and the concns. of CO2 in the waste gases from the respective tanks are measured, whereyby the rates of generation of CO2 by microbes in the respective tanks are measured.
