Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the axial dimensions of a change gear by providing one gear transmission mechanism on the same axle with a torque converter and disposing the other gear transmission mechanism below and parallel to an output shaft of the torque converter, both mechanisms being coupled to each other. CONSTITUTION:An output shaft 14 of a fluid torque converter is provided with a first gear transmission mechanism 12 coupled thereto, which forms an underdrive mechanism for selectively accomplishing plural speed-change stages where the reduction gear ratio is 1 or more. A second gear transmission mechanism 13 forming an overdrive mechanism is mounted on a shaft 51 disposed below and parallel to the output shaft 14. Both trasmission mechanisms 12, 13 are coupled to each other through gears 53, 68, 54. A gear 69 of the described second gear transmission mechanism 13 is coupled to a differential gear mechanism 60 through a counter shaft 55.
