PURPOSE:To eliminate noise by constantly varying the amount of the tracking shift of a servo circuit in both forward and backward direction by a unit extent, detecting and judging the increasing or decreasing direction of a dropout, and shifting a noise band into a vertical blanking period. CONSTITUTION:The amount of delay of a control signal (d) reproduced by a control head 23 is varied increasingly and decreasingly by a unit extent to shift the tracking of a capstan servo circuit 25 in both forward and backward directions by a unit. Dropout levels which correspond to noise band in a vertical blanking period before and after the shift of tracking are compared mutually by a comparator 22. The output of the comparator 22 is supplied to a microcomputer 26 to detect and judges the increasing or decreasing direction of the dropout levels before and after the shift. As a result, auto tracking operation is carried out so as to maximize the dropout level.
