Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a start coupler having a good characteristics, by bundling, arranging, and fixing plural optical fibers and heating and straining a part of this bundle to form a prescribed taper and heating locally the waist part of the taper to make the section round. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers are taken out from an insertion vessel, and plural optical fibers 20 are bundled and arranged, and one end part of this bundle is clipped by a fixing member 14, and the part of optical fibers in the opposite side of a part where a taper should be formed is clipped by the other fixing member 13, and the third base 15 is so moved that the optical fiber bundle is inserted into a heater from the aperture part of the first heater 16. Since upper and lower end parts of the optical fiber bundle are expanded by heating, a spring device 18 is moved minutely to move a guide base 12 to the outside, and optical fibers are arranged, and the optical fiber bundle is strained. Thus, a part 21 formed in a prescribed taper ratio is obtained, and a waist part 22 of the part 21 is heated furthermore to make the sectional form of the waist part 22 into a perfect round. The waist part 22 is cut, and these waist parts 22 are so spliced that arrangement faces of sections are orthogonal to each other, thus forming a start coupler.
