Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily specify a faulty point by securely detecting a fault of a sensor by a microcomputer on the basis of the presence of a signal sent from the sensor a certain time after a starter switch turns on. CONSTITUTION:An engine controller which uses an electronic controller including microcomputers 102-106, etc., is provided with the 1st detecting means of generating the 1st signal on detecting a starter switch 152 being turned on, and a timer means which starts operation in response to the 1st signal and then generates the 2nd signal a certain time, e.g. 0.5sec later. Further, it is provided with the 2nd detecting means of detecting the presence of a signal from a crank angle sensor 146 when the 1st and 2nd signals are present at the same time, and a fault of the crank angle sensor 146 is detected on the basis of the absence of the signal from the sensor 146 by the 2nd detecting means. For example, a program stored in a PAMII1104 is executed to perform said detection.
