Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain inorg. powder suitable as a filler for rubbers and plastics, by depositing a salt of a phosphate ester or a phosphonic acid compd. on the surface of inorg. powder to form a thin layer, said salt being difficultly soluble in water, whereby the surface is made hydrophobic and org. reactivity is imparted thereto.
CONSTITUTION: An easily soluble salt contg. a cation species such as calcium chloride is added to an aq. suspension of inorg. powder such as silica, silica alumina, silicate, carbonate or sulfate powder. To this mixture is added a phosphate ester of the formula ROPO3H2 (wherein R is satd. or unsaturated alkyl having a functional group having org. reactivity such as mercapto group, aryl group) such as monooctyl phosphate or a phosphonate compd. of the fomula R' PO3H2 (wherein R' is the same as R) such as phenylphosphonic acid. The mixture is stirred, whereby a salt of the phosphat ester or the phosphonic acid compd. is deposited on the surface of the inorg. Powder to obtain the desired modified inorg. powder, said salt being difficultly soluble in water.
