Abstract

PURPOSE:To cast lead free cutting steel continuously without contamination of ladle bricks, etc. by mounting a hood above a mold, and adding lead (alloy) into the molten steel in the mold while collecting harmful gases and soot produced from the mold forcibly. CONSTITUTION:Molten steel M is charged through a nozzle 2 into a tundish 3, thence it is charged through a charge port 4 into a mold 5, whereby it is cast continuously. At this time, the part near the port 4 is covered with a cover 7 and the gases and soot produced from the inside of the mold 5 are collected forcibly with a duct 8. A wire rod or the like of lead (alloy) is charged airtightly through a guide pipe 10 inserted into part of the duct 8 and is added into the molten steel in the upper part of the mold 5. According to this method, the contamination of the refractory bricks in the ladle 1 and the tundish 3 is obviated and since the lead is added to the molten steel in the relatively small area in the mold 5, mixing is made uniform.
