Abstract

PURPOSE: A specific amount of a chain extender with a specific structure is made to react with a urethane prepolymer containing terminal isocyanate groups to produce a urethane polymer giving an aqueous dispersion of high stability.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A urethane prepolymer containing terminal isocyanates, preferably of 300W5,000 average molecular weight, is made to react with a chain extender prepared from polycarboxylic anhydrides, preferably phthalic anhydride, and an aliphatic ompound, preferably trimethylolethane, represented by formulaI (A is divalent organic group of formula IIWIV; B is trivalent aliphatic residue) in such an amount as the acid value of the objective urethane polymer becomes more than 20, preferably at a molar A/B ratio of 1:(0.5W1.5).
EFFECT: The resultant product gives an aqueous dispersion capable of forming films with high transparency, smoothness, gloss and mechanical strength,
