Abstract

PURPOSE:To cool is metallic strip of high temp. quickly without causing shape defects by cooling the metallic strip with a cooling medium via an intermediate heat medium sealed in a hollow cooling roll. CONSTITUTION:A cooling roll 2 for cooling a metallic strip 1 is supported by means of bearings 3, and is rotated by a driving device (not shown) connected to a shaft joint 4. An intermediate heat medium 5 such as molten alkali salt is sealed in the hollow part. A heat transfer pipe 6 for cooling having cooling fins 12 and paddles 13 for agitating the medium 5 is inserted via a shaft 2' in the hollow part, and cooling water is fed through an inlet 7 then through a water sealing box 8 for the inlet 7 and a cooling water supply pipe 11 into the pipe 6 to cool the medium 5, after which it is discharged through a water seaing box 10 for an outlet 9 out through the outlet 9. The temp. of the medium 5 is so controlled than the temp. difference with the strip 1 is within the prescribed range.
