Abstract

PURPOSE:To classify hand-written character patterns efficiently, by obtaining information concerning directional components of respective character lines and components-classified character densities of character patterns and counting these information in every directional components of character lines. CONSTITUTION:A binary hand-written character pattern is stored in a storage circuit 1 and is subjected to the normalizing processing for position and size in a normalizing processor 2. This normalized character pattern is framed by a framing processor 3 and is subjected to the smoothing processing in a smoothing processor 4 and is given to a character pattern feature extracting device 5. In the device 5, such operation is performed that a degree of contribution to direction of each black point of the inputted character pattern. The character pattern which is labeled with the degree of contribution to direction by this operation is observed from directions of plural coordinate axes of two coordinate axes and is scanned in directions orthogonal to these coordinate axes in each position on these coordinate axes, and values of degrees of contribution to direction of traversing character lines are counted for every directional components. A character pattern classifying device 6 generates a feature table on a basis of this count value and classifies the character pattern on the basis of this table.
