Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled copolymer having a uniform distribution of composition, by feeding an intermediate polymer of styrene with maleic anhydride to a horizontal continuous polymerizer and removing the heat of reaction and the heat of agitation by injecting maleic anhydride while spraying and evaporating styrene.
CONSTITUTION: From a nozzle 24 styrene is fed to a prepolymerization tank 12 and copolymerized therein with maleic anhydride fed from a nozzle 22 through a flow rate controller 23. The intermediate polymer produced is fed by a pump 13 through a nozzle 16 to a horizontal continuous polymerizer 11. Then, the intermediate polymer is mixed by blades 15 mounted on rotary shafts 14a and 14b rotating in the direction from the inside to the outside of the body 11 and, at the same time, the polymer is mixed with maleic anhydride introduced through a flow rate control valve 23 and nozzles 19 fixed along the longitudinal direction of the body to control the composition of the polymer. Styrene is sprayed from nozzles 21 fixed along the longitudinal direction of the upper part of the body and evaporated to remove the heat of reaction and the heat of agitation, while completing the polymerization reaction. The produced polymer is withdrawn from an exit nozzle 18.
