Abstract

PURPOSE:To make uniform the temperature distribution, to increase the life of a fuel battery and to make it compact and lightweight by a method wherein a separator is prepared by burying a cooling pipe in expanded graphite, heating and molding the graphite under pressure, and the separator with a cooling function is provided for every several cells. CONSTITUTION:A combination of an electrode 2 and ribs 4, and another combination of an electrode 3 and ribs 5 are each combined together to prepare electrodes 19 with ribs. In between the electrodes 19, there is arranged a separator 18 which prevents fluid fuel from being mixed with a fluid oxidizer and serves as a current collector for laminating unit cells. Grooves 7, 8 used as the passageways of the fluid fuel and the fluid oxidizer for the adjacent unit cells are provided in the directions the ribs 4, 5 cross each other. In addition, among the separators 18, a separator 22 with a cooling pipe 21 being buried in it and a cooling function is provided for every several cells. This separator 22 is a molded plate obtained by sandwiching a copper pipe 21 between sheets made of expanded graphite molded under pressure and by molding the sheets under pressure.
