Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily bond arbitrary parts of bundled slender porous glass tubes without causing cracking and exfoliation at the bonded part by feeding glass powder with a prescribed SiO2 content and a prescribed coefft. of thermal expansion to the parts of the tubes to be bonded and by heating the powder to a temp. below the softening temp. of the tubes.
CONSTITUTION: Force plungers 6A, 6B each having a semicircular recess are set opposite to each other on a bottom mold 5. slender porous glass tubes 1 are bundled and put in the recesses, and said glass powder 8 is also charged. An upper regulating disk 7 is mounted on the plungers 6A, 6B, and while heating the powder 8, then plungers 6A, 6B, are slowly pressed in the arrow directions. The powder 8 pentrates the gap among the tubes 1, and part of the powder 8 enters the hollows of the tubes 1. In this state, they are bonded together by sintering to manufacture a bonded plate 2A. The powder 8 has ≥70% SiO2 content and ≤2×10-6/°C coefft. of thermal expansion. It is required to sinter the powder 8 and the tubes 1 at a temp. below the softening temp. of the tubes 1.
