PURPOSE:To enable to print beautiful characters with uniform character pitch and a uniform dot pitch, by providing a character pitch setter and a dot pitch setter for a timing signal generator. CONSTITUTION:The timing signal generator which generates the timing signal for setting a printing position of a printing head is provided with the character pitch setter and the dot pitch setter. The character pitch setter is composed of a projector 28, a timing fence 26 having openings 27, a phototransistor 29 and the like and is adapted to set the character pitch concurrently with the movement of the head, while the dot pitch setter is adapted to set the dot pitch within each of the character pitches thus set. Thus, the occurrence of a misdetection, a double detection and the like due to vibrations incidental to a printing operation or the like is prevented, and the character pitch and the dot pitch are made to be uniform.
