Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the end face of the bundle of optical fibers and to prevent the end face from being burnt by heat ray, by covering a mouthpiece consisting of a malleable metal on the end part of the bundle of optical fibers through a flexible tube and reducing the diameter of the mouthpiece. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1 are bundled, and a flexible tube 2 is covered on the end part of them to form a bundle 3 of optical fibers. A thermally hardening adheive 4 is applied and charged to spaces between optical fibers at a tip 3a of the bundle of optical fibers and the outside circumference of the bundle of opticas fibers. A part of the tip 3a of the bundle of optical fibers is drawn to the approximate middle of the tube 2, and a pipe-shaped mouthpiece 5 which consists of brass and has an inside diameter larger than that of the tube 2 is covered on the tube 2. Under this state, the mouthpiece 5 is subjected to the reducing work by a reducing work machine. Next, the part of the bundle of optical fibers where the adhesive is applied is hardened by heating, and the mouthpiece 5 is kept prescribed length and is cut in the position indicated by the one- dot broken line, and the cut face is polished optically.
