Abstract

PURPOSE:To read a scale electrically and visually by providing graduations for a visual readout to a magnetic scale itself. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic scale 6 with gradations is equipped with a magnetic scale 1 formed by providing magnetized patterns to a magnetic body with constant wavelength, and a scale 5 with graduations made of a nonmagnetic material is stuck to the front surface of the magnetic scale 1. Further, a magnetic head 2 which reads magnetic graduations on the magnetic scale 1 is opposed to the front surface part of the scale 5 with graduations at a desired interval. This magnetic head 2, when slid as shown by arrows, reads the magnetic patterns with constant wavelength, and a read magnetic signal is processed by a detector to display a current position on a digital counter. Further, the graduation on the scale 5 which corresponds to the position of the magnetic head 2 is read to know the current position visually.
