Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the brittle fracture strength and fatique strength of weld zones by welding base metals to the welding structure wherein weld metal of a large coefft. of thermal expansion and weld metal of a small coefft. are superposed and subjecting this to stress relief annealing treatment. CONSTITUTION:The 2nd weld metal 3 of a coefft. alpha2 of thermal expansion is melt stuck within the double bevel weld groove of a tee weld joint constituted of the 1st base metal 1 and the 2nd base metal, after which the 1st weld metal 4 of a coefft. alpha1 of thermal expansion (alpha1<alpha2) is melt stuck thereto. If this joint is subjected to stress relief annealing, the metal 3 expands thermally more than does the metal 4. Hence, compressive stress is generated in the metal 3 and tensile stress in the metal 4. The strength of the weld metal is improved by the cooling of the annealing treatment; in addition, tensile stress is generated in the weld metal 3, and compressive stress in the metal 4 and compressive stress remains in the surface of the metal 4.
