Abstract
PURPOSE: To harden only the rugged parts and near the same partially and satisfactorily by incorporating proximity induction heating for the high frequency heating for the purpose of partial hardening of the rugged parts to be executed after application of a carburizing and slow cooling treatment over the entire surface area of a member.
CONSTITUTION: A thin walled low carbon steel material having small ruggedness, for example, the part A including the grooves (a), (b) of a special rocker shaft for automobiles is hardened in order to be given abrasion resistant properties. At this time, first the entire surface area of the shaft 1 is subjected to a carburizing and slow cooling treatment and is thereby provided with a carburized layer of prescribed thickness. Next, the shaft 1 is set on electrodes 2, 3 constituting a heating coil for generation of induction heating of a proximity induction heating (direct conducting) device. The surface of the electrodes 2, 3 for accepting the shaft 1 are worked to an arc shape confirming the surface of the shaft 1 to minimize the contact resistance during conduction of electricity. When electricity is conducted to this heating coil, the grooves (a), (b) and the peripheral parts thereof are heated overall. Upon ending of this heating, a sprinkler 4 is operated to inject water to these parts and to cool these, and this completes the hardening.
