Abstract

PURPOSE:To retry part of a gain adjustment error due to a flaw on a recording medium by reversing the normal running direction of the recording medium in retrying the error during an automatic gain adjustment. CONSTITUTION:Retrying operation when an error occurs during the gain adjustment 5 is performed by reversing the running direction of a recording medium. For example, if an error is detected by an error detecting circuit 6, a run inverting circuit 12 is informed of that and on the basis of the count value of an ARA length counter 8, a running-direction inverting indication is sent to a capstan driving circuit 10 to read an ARA area while reversing a capstan 11, thereby switching gains of an amplifier 5 successively through a gain switching starting circuit 9. When the output of the amplifier goes to a prescribed value, the switching of gains is stopped.
