Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve coloring characteristics such as coloring density and response speeds as well as life by forming the side of a proton donator layer in contact with an electrochromic layer as a part of high mobility of proton and the other side as a part of low mobility. CONSTITUTION:In an electrochromic display element having a pair of electrodes one of which has >=70% transmittance of visible light and an electrochromic layer and a proton donator layer which releases proton when applied with voltage, the side of the proton donator layer in contact with the electrochromic layer is formed as a part of high mobility of proton and the other side as a part of low mobility of proton. The materials of low mobility of H+ used include metallic oxides such as SnO2, Al2O3, As2O3, MgO, ZnO and CuO which are relatively difficult to be reduced, their composite oxides, fluorides such as LiF and ferrodielectrics such as TiO2.
