PURPOSE:To detect the leakage of Na over the wide range of density with high sensitivity and accuracy by a method wherein a heat generator is used as an ionization electrode to detect the change of an ion current and a value of the heat generator resistance in an Na detector of the sampling type. CONSTITUTION:A sintered heat generator (ionization electrode) 3 prepared by sintering molybudenum silicide, silundum and the like, and an ion collector electrode 4 are arranged in the container of a detector 2 so that the generator and electrode face each other. A pump 9 is operated to lead sampling gas to the container 2 from a pipe 1 to allow Na contained in the gas to touch the heat generator heated to have a high temperature by a heating supply 5. The ionized Na is caught by the ion collector electrode, or cathode, when a detector 8 detects the ion current generated to make clear the leakage of Na (a trace). On the other hand, when Na in the sampling gas shows high density, Na attached to the surface of the heat generator 3 and its resistance is reduced. Then the increased current value obtained at that time is subtracted by the detector 6 in order to detect the leakage of Na (greater volume).
