Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease distortion of a picture, by setting the upper limit of the picture distortion which is caused when the thin line of a run length is transmitted in preference in case the picture elements are reduced and transmitted and decreasing the number of picture elements when the picture distortion exceeds its upper limit. CONSTITUTION:A reader 10 scans an original and converts the information on the original into the white and black binary picture signals. Theseppicture signals are temporarily stored in a line memory 20. A run length calculator 30 scans the memory 20 to calculate the run length, i.e., a continuous number of white and black picture elements. When four picture elements are decreased down to three picture elements to be converted, a picture processor 40 gives a 3/4 multiplication to the run length obtained before a conversion, transmits the integer part in the form of a run length obtained after the conversion and adds the deeimal part to the next run length as a residual. In this case, if the thin line of the run length 1 is continuous, the negative residual increases. Thus a limitation is provided against the increase of the negative residual to reduce the picture distortion.
