Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction between a compound with a functional group containing sulfur such as hexadecyl thiol, triphenylphosphine and iodine affords an aliphatic iodide quantitatively in good yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between (A) a compound of R.A(R is residue of saturated aliphatic group such as alkyl, aralkyl; A is sulfonic acid, sulfonic ester, sulfonyl halide, sulfinic acid, sulfinic ester, disulfide), such as pentanesulfonic acid, pentanesulfinic acid, (B) triphenylphosphine and (C) iodine gives an aliphatic iodide of R.I. The yield is over 80%. Triphenylphosphine oxide and triphenylphosphine sulfide as by-products are properly reduced to triphenylphosphine, which is recovered for reuse.
