Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a corrosion inhibitor for metal having reduced biodegradability and an enhanced corrosion inhibiting effect by using a specified copolymer contg. structural units having alcoholic hydroxyl groups and structural units having carboxyl groups as an effective component. CONSTITUTION:This corrosion inhibitor for metal contacting with a water system contains a copolymer, as an effective component, contg. structural units having alcoholic hydroxyl groups represented by the general formula (where each of R1 and R2 is H or methyl) and structural units having carboxyl groups such as maleic acid. The copolymer includes a maleic acid-allyl alcohol copolymer. The mol.wt. of the copolymer is 1,500-100,000, and the molar ratio of the structural units having carboxyl groups to the structural units having alcoholic hydroxyl groups is 0.5-2.2. This corrosion inhibitor is directly added to a water system at 5-500ppm concn. and used.
