Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately measure the moisture perfectly distilling out the moisture in solid matter also, by distilling a fuel containing solid matter with xylene and lower alcohol and collecting distilled moisture, xylene and lower alcohol. CONSTITUTION:100cc or 100g fuel 10 such as coal, mixed fuel of coal and petroleum is sampled in a distillation flask 1 and 100ml xylene and 5ml n-propyl alcohol are added. Further, a moisture proof tube is provided to the inlet tube of a flask 1 and a solvent 9 and the sample 10 are mixed sufficiently in a ultrasonic wave generating device 7 containing water for 5min and moisture in solid matter is extracted also. Next, a distillation apparatus is attached to the flask 1 and 5ml supersaturated CaCl2 solution Y is put in a water measuring tube 4 then distillation is carried out by a mantle heater 2. A temperature is raised slowly so that condensed liquid is dropped from the lower end of Liebig cooler at the rate of 2-5 drops/sec and it is heated up to a boiling point of xylene finally. In this manner, it is cooled as it is after the distillation is finished and a moisture quantity X in the tube 4 is read. Moisture content is known by the value X- Y. The moisture content is measured accurately because xylene and n- propyl alcohol are separated as an upper layer and moisture is separated in a lower layer clearly.
