Abstract

PURPOSE: To inhibit the decrease of a heat transmission coefficient caused by scaling on a heat-transmitting surface, while avoiding a low heat transmission coefficient in a conventional indirect heating method, by heat-treating organic sludge with use of an electromagnetic wave in a microwave range.
CONSTITUTION: Organic sludge is heat-treated with an electromagnetic wave in a microwave range. This heat treatment may be done in any of batch-type and continuous processes. when the main object is to improve the physical property of the sludge by thermal denaturation, heat exchange is done between heat- treated sludge and untreated sludge to remarkably reduce an electromagnetic wave-heating period. The microwave-heating treatment has a higher effect on the improvement of a biochemical digesting property, as compared with conventional heat treatment under an ordinary pressure. Moreover, the microwave-heating treatment does not raise so much the content of soluble organic substances in sludge-dewatered filtrate as in high-temperature high-pressure heat treatment.
