Abstract

PURPOSE: To display excellent picture in which the luminance correctly corresponds to an input video signal, by applying a pulse signal in pulse width modulation with the video signal to a control electrode and controlling the luminance.
CONSTITUTION: A screen 9 has a fluorescent substance which is illuminated through the radiation of electron beam, and the electron beam generated from an electron beam generating source 2 is collected to collection electrodes 3, 3', and 6. While the electron beam is generated and reaches screen 9, the electron beam is deflected with electrostatic deflection voltages 4 and 7, and the amount radiated on the screen 9 is controlled with a control electrode 5 to control the luminous intensity. A pulse signal in pulse width modulation is applied according to the amount of video signal of picture to be displayed is applied to the electrode 5.
